Anthem of Auroville
Purpose
To tell, to remind ourselves and the world about the underlaying inspiration of Auroville and get inspired by it.
Explanation
Aryadeep S. Acharya believes that the following poem of an Irish American poet (late) Roger Harris profoundly embody the inspiration an spirit of Auroville and should be declared as official anthem of Auroville. He first read it in the first issue of Auroville Today magazine in Sept 1988.
City of Peace
City of peace and God’s unguarded light,
City of silence and the rich unfolding word,
City of love and a laughter of the Gods,
City of man his labour born of dream,
City of harvest born of canyon soil,
City of rich acres sown with strong-eyed toil,
City whose song the hidden soul shall sing,
City of lost boundaries-province once of kings,
City whose deep calm at sunset does recall,
Ages when the earth stood golden-heaven tall,
City on night’s borderline outpost of dawn’s light,
City born of promise and a conqueror’s delight.
This poem should be set to musical tune and this should be played or sung before the community meetings and on other appropriate occasions in and out of Auroville.
